In today’s Gospel, Matthew 8:5-13, we hear the story of the healing of the centurion’s servant by the Word of Jesus.

Scripture everywhere testifies to the power of God’s Word. You see, Christ was not only the bearer and messenger of God’s mighty Word, as were the Prophets and Apostles, but the very Word of God incarnate, having the powers to command the waves, cast out demons, raise the dead, heal the sick and maimed.

Words have power because they have meaning. They provide the means of structured communication. God’s Word communicates God’s thoughts. It is through the Holy Scriptures that we know God’s Will and plan for us. But the supreme expression of God’s communication to humanity is Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God, on whom we as Orthodox Christians anchor our personal relationships with God.

Words have power because they can disclose truth, they have power because they can change lives. For it says, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32). For through words we affect each other’s feelings, thinking and actions. Jesus said, “If one loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and will come to Him and make our home with Him” (John 14:13).

So those who come to Jesus in faith and receive His words enter into a healing process for themselves and others. And remember, a sincere loving word inspires us and encourages us in our journey towards eternal life with Him.
