Fifth Sunday of Great Lent:
St. Mary of Egypt

This the 5th Sunday of Great Lent, we hear the Gospel from Saint Mark 10:32-45 about the third time Jesus speaks of His death. It also speaks of God’s coming kingdom in which James and John were eager to have places of honor next to the Messiah sitting on His throne of glory, but Jesus’ heart at this moment was on sacrifice, not on honor.

He was thinking about His death on the Cross, not about tokens of Glory. This gospel shows to us the clear distinction between the Mindset of Christ and that of His disciples who were more fascinated by visions of glory not the Messiah.

True greatness can be discovered by looking upon every person as one’s brother and sister and by seeking to serve that person with selfless love. True greatness is bestowed by God not the world.

Christ is the supreme example of true greatness who at the Last Supper washed His disciples’ feet and said to them, “I your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another’s feet”.
